The Mothers’ Union

Established since 1903, the Mothers’ Union in Antananarivo is one of the largest groups in the diocese counting up to 2640 active members, and is part of the worldwide Mothers Union organisation present in over 84 countries.

Every year, an annual gathering is organised in Antananarivo where members meet to share the life of the Mothers’ Union throughout the diocese, and new members are formally received during a traditional special service at St Laurent’s Cathedral.

Objectives

The association remains active in different aspects of the life of the church and the community. These include social outreach programmes in communities to assist poor families, vulnerable children and the elderly, and especially women. It also provides various training for those preparing for marriage, participates in fights against gender-based violence, and contributes to local community development projects and the initiatives of the diocese of Antananarivo to become a “Green Diocese”.
